Recent insights on NCM cathodes using Fluorine-free binders were recently published by the team around AIT in the open-access publication.
The replacement of PFAS components with more sustainable alternatives has become a major focal point for research and industry. In this work, different PFAS_free binders (PIB, SBS, NBR and HNBR) for NCM811 cathodes were evaluated and compared to conventional PVdF-based cathodes. A thorough assessment of their physical and chemical properties, electrochemical performance and production costs was conducted. Promising performance was obtained and PFAS-free binders have additionally been identified as a potential way to reduce cost for lithium-ion battery manufacturing.
